Hey Boomers Do You Remember When?

I was thinking tonight about old memories and it came to me it would be fun to go through what we all remember 'way back when'.

Do you remember when?

Your family got their first TV

You picked up milk on the front step and not at the store

You could buy coffee for a quarter

You could make milk by adding water

You couldn't wear jeans to school

I've started this thread on the forum and would love input. Hey we could build a great book! Come join us here:

Baby Boomers - Do You Remember Postum?

I remember back when I decided to give up meat, dairy products, fish, and as everyone else did, coffee. I started using "Postum". Do you remember Postum?

I looked it up in the search engines tonight and here is one definition I found:

"POSTUM is a great hot beverage that is 100% natural and naturally caffeine-free. With a great coffee flavor, it's a great alternative to decaf which still contains 7 to 10 percent caffeine. This way you can have your coffee and drink it too! Postum will not affect the SBS Breast Enhancement System™ in any way, so you can have as much of it as you want. Make delicious treats with Postum too! We are currently carrying only the coffee flavored Postum.

Product Facts and Highlights:

Even back in the 1890's POSTUM was used as a coffee substitute to promote a healthier lifestyle." Taken from http://www.sbsproducts.com/postum_info.htm

Then I found an old blog that spoke of it. This is more along the lines of what I remember:

"Postum is a caffeine-free powdered coffee substitute created by C. W. Post in 1895. It’s not bad, though the packaging could be improved. a powdered coffee substitute sold by the Post Cereals company. The caffeine-free beverage mix was originally created by company founder C. W. Post in 1895 and marketed as a healthful alternative to coffee."

He went on to give the ingredients:

* wheat bran
* wheat
* molasses
* corn dextrin

Oh Yummm (NOT by that description)

So you Baby Boomer out there put up your hands who remember 'Postum'. LOL - can't type when you do that huh :)

Happy Birthday, Baby Boomers!

Today – this day – thousands and thousands of the seventy-six million baby boomers in America are marking their 50th birthday: a milestone to celebrate as significant as or more so than the traditional 40th. Truly,50 is the new 40, the beginning of mid-life, and with every new discovery in a multitude of fields ranging from biogenetic engineering to pharmaceuticals and robotics, that age marker will be pushed ever upward. In the not too distant future it may become possible for many in the developed world to reach, in a healthy, active state, the “natural” age cap of 120 years. That’s a lot of partying to come.

But steady on! Before we all boogie on down, it might be a good idea to take note of some other facts and figures. In 2006, the first-born of the baby boom generation will be celebrating their 60th birthday, and five years away, their 65th. It is estimated that by 2030, when most boomers will have long crossed over the traditional retirement threshold of 65 years of age (and the remaining few fast bearing down on it), they will make up 20% or more of the entire US population (as opposed to their current hold of 13%). Baring bird flu’ and other mutant pandemics, there will, by 2030, be approximately 70 million people over 65 years, and the 85+ age group will have become the fastest growing section. And they won’t all be wearing rose-tinted granny-glasses.

Baby Boomers Blog!!

Boomers/Seniors Turn To Blogging to Stay Connected

Blogs allow certain Baby Boomers/seniors make new friends, keep up on current events and share interests. Especially those Baby Boomers/seniors who are restricted due to illness, financial, etc.

Blogs (Weblogs) are gaining a foothold as a new leisure time for seniors, reports Caral Johnson (Chicago).

"It keeps the head working a little better so you're not just sitting there gawking at the TV."

Bottom line with everything is "use it or loose it" and the same is with the mind.

Baby Boomers Book - Read It Here First!

I told you several days ago that my friend Jim Donovan has kindly contributed his yet to be released book to http://www.babyboomersunited.com We are now at Chapter 5 which talks about Beliefs

A brief from what he wrote:

"Have you avoided trying something new because of a limiting belief? Worse, how many of us are being held back by someone else's limiting beliefs? Do you tell yourself you can't sell because your not a salesperson?

Particularly in starting or running a business, we are cautioned not to take risks, usually by well intentioned friends and family. How many of us have heard, "You can't do that?" These are the dream stealers who, due to their own limiting beliefs, will attempt to discourage you from living your dreams. You must ignore them at all cost! I am not suggesting that you should not seek advice from qualified individuals and mentors, but that you avoid like the plague being swayed by the limiting beliefs of others, especially people who are not in their own business."

Don't miss this wonderful contribution...read more here:

Baby Boomer Memory - Remember 10 Years After?

Alvin Lee's performance, by many accounts, was one of the highlights of Woodstock when he was with 10 years after. His playing shot him into the limelight and soon the band was playing at gigs around the world.

Ahhhhh...Alvin Lee

Looking this up for "Where Are They Now" http://www.babyboomersunited.com/where-are-they-now.htm took me back to a memory I had not too long after Woodstock. Want to hear? Well you're going to :)

A friend of mine, who lived next door to me when I was a teen, just loved Alvin Lee from his appearance at Woodstock. So much so that he took his runners and painted them yellow just like Alvin Lee's shoes. Some time later, he and my girlfriend, who was living with me and my parents at the time, were in a motorcycle accident. My father was called and he and I headed off to the hospital to make sure they were ok. They were scratched up a bit but alright.

As we sat in the waiting room to take them home I saw an orderly come out of this room with broken helmets, torn clothes, and these two bright yellow shoes. Of all that was on that cart represented, or could have, I just had to smile at those yellow shoes. He sure loved Alvin Lee :)

Baby Boomers Retiring

I read in the paper today that "Retiring Early is Not Linked to Living Longer" according to the British Medical Journal.

This statement is based on a study done in Texas with a group that started retiring at age 55. This group was monitored for 26 years and the basic finding was the earlier you retire the higher the mortality rate (or course based on particular factors as well).

So check out ways to keep productive if you are thinking of retiring early, or have retired:

At Baby Boomers United Forum here http://babyboomersunited.com/invision/

Peter Fogel: Over 40 and think reinvention is too hard?

Jim Donovan: Making friends with your money.

Antoine Albert: Looking for early retirement?

Baby Boomers Book-Read It Here First!

Chapter 3

~*~*~*~

CHOOSE YOUR THOUGHTS

You've probably heard the idea that "Thoughts are things," at one time or another. You've probably nodded your head in agreement, understanding that thoughts are in fact, things. You probably believe this and accept that your thoughts, being things, do in fact have power.

Have you really thought about this? Do you apply this to your day to day life? Hopefully you do, because your every thought and word is contributing to your life experience.

For openers, your thoughts produce your emotions which, in turn, result in how you feel about a particular event occurring in your life. It has always amazed me how people can walk around feeling a particular way and not understand that it is their own thoughts, or more accurately what they are telling themselves, that is producing the feeling in the first place. This is why two people can look at the exact same event and have opposite feelings about it.

You are creating your own reality, moment by moment, with the thoughts you choose to think and what you say, both to yourself and others.

Baby Boomers Book - Read It Prior To Publication!!

Chapter 2

~*~*~*~

CHOOSE YOUR PASSION

I'm having so much fun I can't believe I get paid for this. I believe it was Bruce Springsteen who said the statement above to an audience during one of his performances. His sentiment reflects what it feels like to be expressing your natural gifts and doing work that you are absolutely passionate about. People often ask me how they can find their "purpose" or what business they should start. The key is expressed above.

Find whatever it is that you just do without thinking about it or would do whether or not you were being paid for it. For me this is writing and speaking, essentially variations on a theme of being able to communicate information that will help other people. It's something that I just do, something that I started doing years before I ever thought about making a living at it. I began writing a newsletter several years before I even considered writing a book and way before I began doing seminars.

Action step - Finding your passion
