Baby Boomers Health Concerns

"Hope I Die Before I Get Old"

Remember that song- Ya the "Who"

As a Baby Boomer, what do you consider to be your major health concerns?

Statistics show that stess is the major health concern. Boomers are not only dealing with their own aging problems, but their parents aging and their children still at home. Talk about stress!

The other concerns are ostioprosis, Alzheimer's disease and, heaven forbid, sexual problems, just to name a few.

How we can keep healthy:

- drinking at least 5-8 glasses of filtered water per day.

- Exercise! Run, Walk, Swim, Sex - Just move!

- Eat healthy foods

- Take vitamins and supplements. Supplementing your diet now with life-saving anti-oxidants will stave off premature aging, boost your immune system and limit free radical damage. Do pay attention to the labels!

- Rest and relazation. Get your zzzzzzz's .

Articles I have read say Boomers are looking at living to at least 100 - let's make them those great years!

Baby Boomer - Grey and Gay!

You hit mid-life and finally realize you are gay, or decide to come out of the closet. Gay men and women are finally throwing off their parents view of what they should be and embracing who they really are.

Way To Go G.G. Baby Boomers!!

It is estimated that there are between one million and three million gay and lesbian seniors in just the U.S. and the number is expected to multiply.

Being gay certainly was not as acceptable back in the 'flower power' time, even though sexual experimentation was. So now a lot of baby boomers are opening up to their sexual preference, or admitting that their long time roommate is really their lover. How wonderful to finally be open about your love!

Baby Boomer Loving

There were two articles in the paper this week about Baby Boomers and love. One was about 'empty nest' Baby Boomers who are now turning to 4 legged animals (mainly dogs) to take the place of children who have left. The other was on Baby Boomers and online dating.

I love pets and have both dogs and cats, and can understand the desire to have an animal to cuddle, but I would rather have a human to cuddle in the dark of night, so this blog is on the second article. I will cover the other one soon!

What this particular article said is that Baby Boomers are more open to online dating - why - mainly because their kids are doing it, and not only doing it but finding Love Online! This has given Boomers a trust of online dating that they may not normally have. As well, the article reported that the majority of online dating membership sites are seeing that the age range of people joining is the Baby Boomer age group and they are paying attention.

Of course Baby Boomers United has a great online dating page so do check it out here:

Baby Boomers and Sex

There was a news piece tonight that said Baby Boomers are too tired to have sex... hmmm let's think about that. The media may think that we are 'over the hill' and not interested in sex but let's look at some stats, shall we :)

A good percentage of the Baby Boomer population are enjoying sex more than before 'cause not only are they past the age of reproduction, but many now have access to medications, some natural, some not, that help boost the 'slump' ( for example Viagra) . Sexuality in midlife, health and age related physical problems can be treated and overcome rather than accepted as part of growing older. Sex does not have to end with getting older!

Also in this mixture is that many Baby Boomers are in their second, third (or more) singleness and are out to have a good time, if not a long time. A lot of the spirit of the "free love" remains.

In this new age, boomer men and women looking for a spicier sex life often means experimenting with activities that convey a 'touch' of the forbidden. Phone sex with a spouse or intimate partner and the exchange of erotic notes and e-mails are popular.

Boomers are not the first to discover later-in-life sexuality, and may not be the last, but are certainly opening up a whole new avenue, as Baby Boomers always did!

Online Dating - The Ignored Generation?

I was reading a blog today that stated that the "older generation - over 40" is being ignored. As my blog has stated, and as I have said over and over in my blog and at my website www.babyboomersunited.com, the Boomer Generation certainly is NOT being igorned in Online Dating. If anything, Boomers are the up-and-coming-of online daters. According to Nielsen/Net Ratings, the number of online dating site users are 55 or older. Hey Boomers, here we are!

Online dating is "Booming" like never before!

Some of the Boomer Online Dating Sites can be found here:

Where Are My Keys? Is My Memory Going?

Am I forgertful or is it dementia?

This is a big question for Baby Boomers!

Foregetfullness is striking terror in the hearts of aging baby boomers everywhere. Our first thought is - is this normal...the second thought is - am I loosing it?!

If you've been to the grocery store and you forgot something, that's normal. If you forgot you were just at the grocery store that is not normal.

We are noticing memory lapses, in a lot of cases, 'cause so many of us are taking prescription drugs for:

*depression
* anxiety
* obesity
* heart disease
* cholesterol
* etc.

And all of these kind of drugs have side effects on the brain.

A key for Brain Power is to keep your brain active. Learn new things, read, write, expand your mind and keep your body active too!

Aging Baby Boomers - Say What?!

Everything you read today is saying something along the lines of "aging Baby Boomers are going to break the medical system", but Baby Boomers are not about to "age gracefully", walk, or be pushed into retirement homes - are we!

So what are we possibly facing:

- Diabetes
- Stroke
- Heart attack
- Arthritis
- Loss of sight
- Incontinence
- And the dreaded - lack of sexual desire

Baby Boomers want to look good and stay healthy. Signs and symptoms of aging such as wrinkles, age spots, memory changes, etc., are not part of Baby Boomer's long-range health plans.

There are many things Baby Boomers can do and are doing:

- Exercise, both physically and mentally (stretch the body and the mind)
- Vitamins/Supplements (antioxidants)
- Acupuncture (better than surgery!)

But as Baby Boomers we are doing more than the generation before us to take care of our bodies as we face these types of problems. We will not "age", we will "anti-age"!

More to come on this big topic.

Baby Boomer's Lovin'

Is love, intimate relationships and sex still important to Baby Boomers? You bet!! From reports that I have read on the internet, they are now if not more important than ever before.

Many people I talk to who are in the Boomer years, and single, they have no doubt that they not only want a loving relationship but that they will find one - and what is interesting is that Boomers are way more open to finding love relationships through online dating than any other age group. We were always the trendsetters weren't we?!

If you look at online dating sites they are realizing that this is a large group that is ready, and more than able, to look for love online. They are changing their online dating sites to help Baby Boomers find who and what they want. These online dating websites report that the over 50 crowd makes up one of the fastest growing segments in the online dating world. So this not only means that they are paying more attention to Baby Boomers, in all areas: security, service, etc.

Baby Boomers United is totally geared to the needs on Boomers. Find some great online dating sites at here - http://www.babyboomersunited.com/BabyBoomer-Online-Dating.htm

Take a Hike Back to Basics

The image many boomers have of themselves energetically striding towards an active retirement and old age of vim and vigour is belied by a report on boomers’ health from the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation. The report was published in February 2006 to mark the coming of age of the first of the baby boomers who will hit 60 this year, and is a follow-up to a similar one done 10 years ago. The most significant finding of this latest investigation is a 60% increase over the last 10 years in obesity levels amongst boomers aged 45-59, with the blame firmly placed on boomers’ increasingly sedentary lifestyles and unhealthy eating habits.

Far from being the hale and hearty outdoors people of popular imagination, it appears that over half of Canadian boomers are inactive sloths and couch potatoes, and over a third are obese. Furthermore, 57% of them do not even believe that being overweight contributes to cardiovascular disease, the country’s leading cause of death according to Statistics Canada. The situation is emblematic of the baby boom generation throughout the developed world.

The problem facing fat and sluggish boomers is not early death – far from it, for improved medical treatments mean that actual mortality rates are dropping. The problem is that it is increasingly likely that many boomers do face an extended life of potentially debilitating illnesses that will, at the very least, circumscribe their enjoyment of what’s left. Aside from the obvious strokes and heart attacks, other nasties that might rear their ugly heads as lethargic boomers stare at 60 and beyond include arthritis, the cancers (breast, colon, prostrate, et al.), diabetes, and osteoporosis - to say nothing of psychological depression and sexual dysfunction.

Baby Boomer Dating

So we have been through a marriage or two, maybe had a kid or two, and now we find ourselves looking for love once again . Well don't give up BB's 'cause there are lots of us out there and we are looking for each other!

Yes But!!

OK, so you look in the mirror and you see a few lines around the eyes, a bit of a sag in the chin/neck, a bit of a tummy buldge, well guess what - other Baby Boomers are seeing the same thing! Just remember that it is what is in the heart and the soul of the Baby Boomers that kept us stronge and drives us to reach out to each other. Who knows us better?!

It's the second (third or more time around)

If you were married, or in a partnership, for a long time the chances are you are scared to death of dating, getting back into that 'scene'. Well let me tell you, this is one of the best ways to actually get back out there and YOU can decide who you want to connect with and who you don't.

Online Dating?

Yes online dating! One of the benefits of online dating is that you don't have to put yourself back in the 'scene' so to speak too quickly. In this case, the first step is to find the right online dating membership site that fits your needs. Most Boomers find online dating just what they are looking for. Boomers have less hang ups about connecting with people online. Baby boomers will, no doubt, change the face of online dating, and yes we can find love online.
