Most of us put things off at one time or another. According to Dr. Gail Saltz, about 20% of Americans are chronic procrastinators.
Do you experience any of the following situations?
• Overwhelmed with so much to do that you can’t even get started?
• Have difficulty deciding which things on your “To Do” list are most important?
• Have limiting beliefs and/or patterns of behavior that may have served you in the past but no longer serve you now?
• Believe you can “do it all” – cannot say no?
• Beat yourself up for not doing what you say you will do?
• Worry about being perfect?
• Struggle making decisions?
• Do things for others but never have time for yourself?
• Not managing your time efficiently?
Many people think that the reason they put things off is that they are lazy, but the most common reasons are fears of:
• Failure
• Success
• Not being perfect
• Being judged
You may limit yourself from taking action or moving forward, by the beliefs you have from past experiences by what you heard, saw, learned, read or observed from your parents, teachers, peers, and TV. This may cause you to put off something that you want or love to do. Perhaps you feel you are not important enough, that you do not deserve it or that other people come first.
Or, are you rebelling? If you are angry or upset with a spouse, boss or friend, no matter what they ask you to do or try to pressure you into, you are just not going to do it. Does this describe you?
When you have too many things to do, it can be so overwhelming that you just cannot seem to get started. You can end up doing nothing and beat yourself up, causing more stress and feeling overwhelmed. It becomes an insurmountable cycle, which robs you of your peace of mind.
